Nairobi National Park Tours: Unforgettable Safari Adventures Ahead!

Lion in Nairobi National Park

Located only 7km from the city centre, Nairobi National Park is the world’s only national park within a capital city. The prime location of the park near a major city offers several kenya advantages:

The Urban Safari: Where else can you photograph a rhino with a skyscraper in the background? The urban and wild landscapes make for truly once in a lifetime photos and memories.

Ultimate Accessibility: Don’t have time for a multi-day safari to the Maasai Mara or Amboseli National park? A day trip to Nairobi National Park requires as little as 4-6 hours and you will have yourself an authentic African safari adventure. Its easy accessibility means you can have wildlife safari experience and be back at your hotel for lunch. The Park is also easily accessible from JKIA, meaning even if you have a 6 hours layover, you can still sample the thrill of a Kenya safari tour.

Rich & Diverse Wildlife: The park is a rhino sanctuary and is home to four of the “Big Five” (lions, leopards, buffaloes and rhinos). The only member of the Big 5 missing from the park is the elephant, but these can be seen at the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage which is housed within the Nairobi National park. The park is also a birdwatching haven, with over 430 recorded bird species. Expect to see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, gazelles, and so many other animals. Actually, it’s possible to see animals right at the entrance gate. A friend who recently joined me for a Nairobi game drive couldn’t believe it when we spotted a pride of lions, less than 5 minutes after  entering through the Langata gate. That’s the magic of a Nairobi safari tour.

Types of Nairobi National Park Tours

Going on a Nairobi National park tour is a chance to create lifetime memories. I am James Gatheru, a local KPSGA-Certified Kenya safari guide and a travel consultant and writer for Aj Kenya Safaris Ltd. I have been organizing and guiding Nairobi safari tours for my guests for over a decade now, and I still remember the thrill of my first Nairobi Safari Tour.

We spotted a lion looking directly at us, and in the background, the Nairobi city skyline. A short distance on the opposite side, an amazing view of a tower of giraffes silhouetted against the rising sun and the distant skyscrapers of Nairobi’s central business district. It was a beautiful moment.

And the good news? Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a family adventure, we have a Nairobi National Park tour for you. You can opt to join our group tours or book a private safari for just you and your friends or family. Ultimately, the choice comes down to your preference and budget. The most common types of Nairobi national park tours are:

1. Half-Day Nairobi National Park Tour

Half-day tours are ideal for travelers on a tight schedule or those combining the park with other city attractions. For instance, you can do a half-day morning safari in the park, then between 12:00 PM -1:00 AM, visit David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. Then exit the park, have lunch, and later visit the Giraffe Center. Only returning to your hotel around 6:00 pm. The half-day tour starts around 6:00 AM to catch the animals at their most active. You will be able to cover a significant part of the 117km2 of the park. The cost of a half-day Nairobi National park safari ranges from USD 240 per person based on one person travelling alone, or USD 160 per person based on two people traveling together.

2. Full-Day Nairobi National Park Safari

This experience is ideal for wildlife photographers and those who want a deeper, more relaxed experience. The adventure lasts for about 8 hours, allowing you to explore the park’s diverse habitats, from open plains to acacia forests. Around lunch hour, your guide will find a nice place such as the historic Ivory Burning Site Monument, and right there, in the middle of the park, you will have lunch. The tour cost ranges from USD $250 to USD 300 per person.

3. Private Nairobi National Park Tour

  • Best for: Couples, families with young children or serious photographers who want full control over the itinerary.
  • What to Expect: A completely personalized trip. You decide when to start, how long to stay at a sighting and where to go. The vehicle is yours exclusively.
  • Cost: $120 – $300+ USD per person, depending on group size and vehicle type.
A wide-angle shot of a group of zebras spread out across a golden-brown grassy plain under a clear blue sky. Their black and white stripes stand out against the natural landscape. Some zebras have their heads down, eating the grass, while others have their heads up, looking around. In the background, the landscape rolls off into hills, showing the vastness of the national park. The overall feeling is one of serenity and natural beauty, capturing a typical scene of wildlife thriving in its habitat.

Insider Tips for a Perfect Tour

Book a KPSGA-Certified Guide: A guide from the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association will have deep knowledge and can spot animals you would never see on your own. Their expertise is worth every penny.

Be Patient: Don’t rush from one sighting to the next. Sometimes the best moments happen when you just wait quietly and observe.* Camera Tip: Ask your guide to turn off the engine to reduce vibration. A simple beanbag to rest your lens on the window frame makes a big difference.

Wildlife Etiquette: This is their home. Always keep a safe distance, never ask your driver to get too close, and keep your voice down. Never feed the animals.

Ready to go on your own urban safari? A Nairobi National Park tour has wildlife, scenery and memories waiting for you just outside the city.
